Construction and engineering activities can involve complex projects with multiple inputs by a range of stakeholders, trades and professions. These include the client, the designer, principal contractors, subcontractors and those who will be operating and maintaining the resultant building or installation. This can become complex when a project involves in-house departments and outsourced agencies and has overlapping timescales, with numerous contractors on or off site. Even short duration construction work such as the installations of security or telecommunication systems, repairs to roofing, building refurbishment, shop fitting or a small extension must be properly managed.
It is a legal requirement that a range of construction and engineering activities are properly designed, planned, constructed and commissioned to ensure that health and safety matters are managed from design through to use and maintenance and ultimate demolition or dismantling. The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) sets out a range of responsibilities and duties that apply to short duration construction projects (non-notifiable projects) as well as longer duration construction projects (notifiable projects).
It is the responsibility of clients to ensure that all these requirements are met. At Praxis42, we help our clients by providing either a competent resource to help select competent appointees and manage shorter duration work, such as an office refurbishment or extension or a CDM co-ordinator for notifiable construction projects.
